The Downhill in Lake Louise had, up until this year, been Lindsey Vonn’s domain. In the Super G, she admitted that “I’ve always somehow got the win taken away from me here in Lake Louise in Super-G; I’ve always lost by a very small margin.” This year it may have been Maria Riesch who stole the show in the Downhill, but this was Lindsey Vonn at her very best as she won the in devastating fashion, 0.83 seconds ahead of Riesch with American Julia Mancuso in third.

Good friends they may be but when the wand is broken and they are on the track, success is all that matters. Lindsey Vonn has been the dominant downhiller over the last three seasons and losing in Lake Louise hurt. “I definitely wanted to close out this weekend with a bang and make a statement and put people’s doubts to rest and I think I did that today. I tried to have a little revenge yesterday, but I kind of crashed but I still got second, so today I wanted to come out here and really show everyone how I CAN ski. I’ve been skiing well but making a lot of mistakes but today I wanted to have a great inspection and really execute on the line,” explained Vonn after the race. Never having won the Super G in Lake Louise a smiling Vonn continued “If I CAN’t win the downhill then it’s great that I CAN at least win the Super-G.”

After the success in the Downhill, Maria Riesch was not downbeat in not completing an unbeaten weekend: “It was a good run not perfect, Lindsey showed how you CAN be almost a second faster but still second place is really, really good and I’m happy to be back on the podium in Super-G. Going away from Lake Louise with 280 points is giving me a really good feeling, and I’m really happy that I had successful days here and I’m looking forward to St. Moritz because I like this track too,” Riesch said.

In the Downhill races, Riesch had started after Vonn, yet for the Super G, the order was reversed. Vonn, starting last of the top seeds focused all her energy into her run and Riesch could only watch in the finish as the American came down to take the win, her eleventh in World Cup Super G’s.

Anna Fenninger added to her growing reputation with another great result to place fourth overall just over a second back from Vonn.

It may have been bitterly cold (-20 degrees) but Vonn showed the rest the way home!
