The debut of the WSK Euro Series in Sarno (Italy) also marked the beginning of one of the two main championships in Nyck De Vries' racing calendar 2011. The Dutch kartman, who was racing in the KF1 category, constantly improved his performances on the Sarno circuit and crossed the finish line of the first final as winner. The rain that came on Sunday also brought a few race mishaps with it. The driver of the Zanardi-Parilla n°1 kart suffered the consequence of this situation twice and had to content himself with a 5th place in the second final.

It is often said that great champions are made from adversity. This is exactly what happened near Naples, during this mid-March weekend, with a Nyck De Vries in top form despite a group of very aggressive rivals! "The World Championship as well as the WSK Euro Series are going to be very close and hard fought in KF1 this season", said the Dutch young driver as first thing. "There are many young drivers who are very hard to beat and this is really exciting".

With timed qualifying, the Chiesa Corse driver soon began to feel at ease. "I set the second best lap time in the first session. But for the Super Pole, where the 10 best drivers race against each other, I chose to drive all alone, while others remained together to take advantage of drafting. So I fell down to 6th place".

Nyck was 5th twice in the heats, without being really satisfied with his technical choices. But then, once again, the driver and his team made a perfect analysis of the situation and adjusted all the parameters to conditions. "The final race went as I had hoped. There were some intense fights on the track, my equipment kept improving lap after lap and I was able to make a difference. It's a pity that Saturday's first final does not give as many points as Sunday's, but I was happy I could start my KF1 season like this".

On Sunday, Nyck had the firm intention of repeating his excellent performance, even more so that he knew he could still improve his performance level. He proved it by winning the first heat. Unfortunately, the rest of the race had a bitter taste for 2010 World Champion. It is true that the rain started to fall and changed grip conditions, but that is not the only reason… "In the pack, there are too many drivers who just push to overtake and who think that a race is won at the start. I began losing places in the second heat because of that. In the final race, I took a good start and was third when I was bumped into at the back while I was braking, on the second bend. Then I found myself 10th on the first lap. Instead of a fight for victory, as I thought I could do after my best lap time in race, it became a catch up race". At the wheel of his Zanardi-Parilla, Nyck was forced to content himself with a 5th place. But there he is, 2nd in the Championship anyway, and determined to conquer the WSK Euro Series, as he has already done twice in KF3…

La victoire, une bonne habitude pour Nyck

Avec le début de la WSK Euro Series à Sarno (Italie), c'est l'un des deux championnats majeurs de la saison 2011 de Nyck De Vries qui a commencé. Engagé dans la catégorie KF1, le kartman hollandais n'a cessé de monter en puissance sur le circuit de Sarno pour franchir en vainqueur l'arrivée de la première finale. Le dimanche, la pluie a fait son apparition, entraînant avec elle quelques incidents de course. Le pilote du kart Zanardi-Parilla n°1 en a fait les frais à deux reprises, l'obligeant à se contenter cette fois de la 5e position dans la deuxième finale.

On dit souvent que c'est dans l'adversité que l'on reconnaît les grands champions. Près de Naples à la mi-mars, l'adage s'est vérifié, avec un Nyck De Vries au top niveau malgré une concurrence très affûtée ! “Le Championnat du Monde comme la WSK Euro Series s'annoncent très serrés et très disputés cette saison en KF1”, commente d'entrée le jeune hollandais. “Il y a une pléiade de jeunes pilotes difficiles à battre et c'est très excitant”.

Avec les essais chronométrés, le pilote Chiesa Corse est vite dans l'ambiance. “J'ai réalisé le 2e meilleur temps de la première séance. Mais pour la Super Pole, lors de laquelle les 10 meilleurs s'élancent à nouveau, j'ai choisi de rouler tout seul, alors que certains sont restés groupés pour profiter du phénomène d'aspiration. J'ai ainsi chuté en 6e position”.

Nyck enchaîne avec deux 5e places dans les manches, sans se montrer vraiment satisfait de ses choix techniques. Une fois de plus, le pilote et son équipe vont parfaitement analyser la situation et ajuster tous les paramètres aux conditions. “La finale s'est déroulée comme je l'espérais. Il y a eu de belles bagarres en piste, le matériel s'est constamment amélioré au fil des tours et j'ai pu faire la différence. J'ai regretté que la première finale du samedi n'apporte pas autant de points que celle du dimanche, mais j'étais heureux de commencer ma saison en KF1 de cette manière”.

Le dimanche, Nyck a la ferme intention de récidiver, d'autant qu'il sait qu'il peut améliorer encore son niveau de performance. Il le prouve en gagnant la première manche. Hélas, la suite va laisser un goût amer au Champion du Monde 2010. Certes, la pluie s’est mise à tomber, modifiant les conditions d’adhérence, mais ce n’est pas la seule raison… “Dans le peloton, il y a trop de pilotes qui poussent pour doubler et qui croit qu’une course se gagne au départ. J’ai commencé par perdre des places à cause de ça dans la deuxième manche. En finale, j’ai réussi à prendre un bon départ et j’étais 3e quand j’ai été heurté par l’arrière dès le freinage du deuxième virage. Je me suis alors retrouvé 10e dans le premier tour. Plutôt que de me battre pour la victoire, comme mon meilleur tour en course me le laissait espérer, j’ai dû consacrer ma course à remonter”. Au volant de son Zanardi-Parilla, Nyck doit ainsi se contenter de la 5e place. Le voilà toutefois en 2e position au Championnat, bien décidé à remporter la WSK Euro Series, comme il l’a déjà fait deux fois en KF3…
