Matteo Eydallin and Denis Trento (Italy) are the new ski mountaineering world team champions. After two sunny mornings, yesterday was overcast and clouds covered the mountains above 1400 meters. "In part, the visibility was only a few meters, "we ventured the downhill race almost 'in the dark' "say many athletes after the competition. An unpleasant last frame for an exciting race that has reserved many surprises. Since the first few meters, the men's race was dominated by two teams that immediately distanced all the others: Matteo Eydallin / Denis Trento (Italy) and William Bon Mardion / Didier Blanc (France). The French athletes were leading during the first part of the race, then the Italian team overtook them at the third climb and earn a lead of about one minute. The French team in the downhill portion closed the gap and came at a few meters from the Italian athletes. During the last change of skins Eydallin and Trento, respecting the regulation signs on the trail, took off their skis and continued on foot. Bon Mardion and Blanc did not take off their skis as indicated by the flags and took advantage of the downhill portion on skis to overtake the Italian team and thus cut the finish line first, 30 seconds later. The irregularity was immediately reported by the Italian team protested with the ISMF jurors. After an afternoon of suspense, in which the international jury led by Antoine China evaluated both the application and the counter-appeal filed respectively by the teams of Italy and France, it was a unanimous decision that a penalty of three minutes, as required by Regulation, be inflicted on the French team. This team regressed to third position, following the other Italian team, composed of Manfred Reichegger / Lorenzo Holzknecht, who won the silver medal. The decision came with controversy relating in part to a lack of organization (there wans nobody stopping the athletes on the pitch), in part to a flaw in the ISMF regulation, which does not explicitly specify that it is compulsory to take off skis in the presence of yellow flags. This indication, however, has always been observed in all races and pointed out at briefings.
"I had no doubt that the victory would be ours - says Matteo Eydallin - it is clear that the irregularities committed by the French team would be a great injustice, had the jury not intervened." The podium is Italian, with two teams winning gold and silver medal, and France winning an embittered bronze medal.
In the women's race fewer were the surprises, with a podium dominated by Switzerland. The phenomena Nathalie Etzensperger / Marie Troillet imposed themselves from the start and won with a good gap on the second team, the Italian Roberta Pedranzini and Francesca Martinelli. Despite the announcement of an intended withdrawal this year, this team does not want to give in to the new generations and again confirms to be at the highest level of international ski mountaineering. Third place went to Gabrielle Magnenat and Séverine Pont Combe.
Today the junior and cadet races confirmed the World Cup ranking, in a track of one thousand meters of altitude to gain. In the cadet men class the podium is entirely colored by azure, the Italy shows his strenght with Federico Nicolini (first), Luca Faifer (second) and Gianluca Vanzetta (third). In the women class the gold medal goes to the french Louise Borgnet, silver medal for the spanish Laura Balet, third place for Ina Forchthammer (AUT).
In the junior men Anton Palzer confirmed himself one more time winning the competition, followed by Alan Tissieres (SUI) and Idris Hirsch (FRA). In the women category first place for Axelle Mollaret (FRA), second place for Jennifer Fiechter (SUI), third place for Siliva Piccagnoni (ITA).
