Front row starter Andrea Iannone (Speed Master) took the hole shot off the start of the race, ahead of pole starter Marc Márquez (Team CatalunyaCaixa Repsol), which then began a race long fight for first place between the two, with Stefan Bradl (Viessmann Kiefer Racing) briefly entering the challenge but dropping off the front and finally crossing the line fourth, a finish that just bumps him out of the Championship lead by a single point.
Thomas Lüthi (Interwetten Paddock Moto2) made a return to the podium with a third place after a strong weekend that saw the Swiss rider at the top of two practice sessions and second on the starting grid, and finally winning a hard fought battle for the final podium position over Bradl and Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project).
Corsi took fifth ahead of Alex de Angelis (JiR Moto2), with Bradley Smith (Tech 3 Racing) crossing the line 5 and a half seconds behind de Angelis to take seventh. Dominique Aegerter (Technomag-CIP) was eighth with Esteve Rabat (Blusens-STX) and Mika Kallio (Marc VDS Racing) rounding out the top ten finishers.
Jordi Torres (Mapfre Aspar), Raffaele De Rosa (NGM Forward Racing) and Ricky Cardús (QMMF Racing Team) had early crashes, as did a returning to racing Axel Pons (Pons HP 40) and local favorite Yuki Takahashi (Gresini Racing). The Japanese rider was able to reenter the race to finish 30th.
